Saldanha Bay Industrial Development Zone: Opportunity for Economic Growth

​Saldanha Bay has long been acknowledged as an important resource for the sustainable growth and development of the West Coast region.

Situated 120 km north of Cape Town, with a natural deep water port in addition to existing and a growing number of industrial developments. Its sheltered harbor plays an important part in the Sishen-Saldanha iron-ore project (connected by the Sishen-Saldanha Railway Line) at which Saldanha Steel takes center stage.

Therefore, it is no surprise that Saldanha Bay is the strategic choice for a new maritime hub of the industry to relieve the pressure on the port of Cape Town, which has limited room for further expansion.

The proposed IDZ, which would create about 12 000 jobs (which include freight jobs, engineering jobs, supply chain jobs, and more) and generate R11.2-billion a year for the economy, would be a hub for investment and boost export-oriented activities in the region.

The feasibility study released last year concentrated on potential industrial clusters. These included a renewable energy production and manufacturing cluster, an oil supply/base hub servicing the oil and gas industry, and a maritime ship-building and repair cluster, as well as a steel and minerals production and manufacturing cluster.

The Western Cape government initiated the process of creating an IDZ in Saldanha Bay in 2008 to grow economic development in the province.
